5 ways to look after your skin without products

Think beauty products are the only way to care for your skin? Think again!

Itā€™s a tough realisation that no matter how many skincare products are in your cabinet, or how much money youā€™ve spent on it all, these products can only do so much to help you get a flawless complexion. Within the beauty industry, you canā€™t get away from seeing ā€˜must haveā€™ beauty hauls and tutorials all over your Instagram feed. But letā€™s be honest for a second: using the trendiest, most expensive 7-step toning ritual wonā€™t amount to much if you go to bed with all your makeup still on, eat junk food and get less than 6 hours sleep because you want to watch ā€˜just one more episodeā€™ every night. Iā€™m munching on chocolate from the Easter Bunny as I write this, so thereā€™s no judgement here. What Iā€™m saying is, we all do it, but we have to stop relying on our skincare products and take matters into our own hands.

There are SO many lifestyle choices that you need to consider in your search for happy, healthy skin. So, instead of reaching for your exfoliating scrub next time you have a breakout, try evaluating your lifestyle choices and try out these 5 skin-loving habits instead.

1. Limit your time in the sun
A massive 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun, so the best piece of advice we can give you for younger, brighter skin is to stay out of the sun. Of course, thatā€™s not always possible, so make sure when you are exposed to UV rays that youā€™re wearing sunscreen and sunglasses (squinting = wrinkles around your eyes).

2. Get More Beauty Sleep
Your skin will look and feel rejuvenated after a good nightā€™s sleep. When weā€™re sleeping, we produce more collagen and growth hormones, which collectively help fight fine lines, wrinkles and help repair the damage our skin faces daily. Say goodbye to the bags under your eyes and hello to a brighter, healthier complexion.

3. Embrace an Antioxidant-Rich Diet
Antioxidants are substances that protect your cells against free radicals, which may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Theyā€™re often found in food which we eat every day. They can help diminish signs of ageing, reduce inflammation, protect your skin from potential disease, brighten skin tone, and even help skin to repair! So fruit and veg should be your best friend when youā€™re looking for healthier skin. Food such as strawberries, blueberries, plums, kidney beans, broccoli and carrots are all rich in antioxidants.

4. Shower and wash your face with lukewarm water
A hot shower could be doing more harm than good when it comes to your skin's health. Hot showers strip the skin of sebum, the healthy fats and oils necessary for skin health leaving your skin more dehydrated than ever.

5. Exercise
It's hardly news that exercise is great for your heart, lungs, and mental health, but hereā€™s another reason to get moving: Regular exercise is one of the keys to healthy skin. Exercising helps get the heart rate up and improves blood circulation. This helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin which promotes collagen production and promotes new skin cells which keeps the skin looking glowing.

Are you ready to make a change? Take it slow, try to switch up your routine and add at least one of these tips into your schedule this week. I think Iā€™ll try eating more fruit. Which one will you try?
